History

Dent bequeathed the land to his daughter, Julia Dent, who married Ulysses S. Grant in 1848. For many years, the Grant family lived on the land known as White Haven. Ulysses S. Grant wrote his memoirs here, which were later published after his death.

After Ulysses S. Grant died, the land was sold to the Busch family, who owned the Anheuser-Busch brewing company. The land was turned into a farm and nature reserve by the Busch family, and it was opened to the public in 1954. Grant’s Farm is now owned and run by the Busch family and is a major tourist attraction in St. Louis.

Attractions
